Postgame Pelini

This is a picture taken in New Orleans, following the BCS Championship Game. It appeared on the website deadspin.com, which says it was taken at 3 a.m.

  1. Probably recruiting.

  2. Not the first time Bo’s been seen like that after a bowl game. San Antonio a few years ago was quite a sight…especially when the underage players were drinking with him.

Bo needs to quit with this stuff…he’s a HEAD COACH!!!!

  3. Looks like the honeymoon is over already. In Bo’s defense, he isn’t holding any alcohol, has probably been awake for over 20 hours and is working on several nights (or weeks) of very little sleep. I’m sure we scan find some pics of Schick looking bombed even when he hasn’t had a drop of alcohol. Matt - Why don’t you ask him what he was doing when the picture was taken?

I don’t even see any booze in the picture. The Green Lantern appears to be holding a fast food cup, unless they drink booze through a straw in New Orleans.

Give the guy a break - congratulate, don’t hate.

  4. Did you take the photo yourself with you own camera? If not, did you stop to think it may have been “photoshopped”? It was 3 a.m., and he was celebrating a National Championship. If you read Tom Shatel’s column, Bo celebrated with his family right after the game on the sidelines. That tells me what a great family man he is. Did he deserve to enjoy himself later at the hotel after his kids were asleep? You bet he did.

  5. Sure, not the greatest image of your brand new head coach. Who knows, maybe he was caught mid-word and was actually just passing through.

Dougneb - If you have any of those pics, let me know.

    I sure did. I should’ve used a soft-focus lense, though.

Someone celebrates with his family and he’s automatically a great family man? I’m sure he is, but your investigative reporting wouldn’t get you on the I-Team.

  6. Do you think this pic is real? Looks a bit “off” to me.

If it is real…Bo needs to realize that although he was celebrating a national title, didn’t have alcohol in his hand, wasn’t driving etc, he is still a head coach. Head coaches need to be responsible and set good examples. This is NOT a good example.

  7. I hate to say this and I hope it doesn’t stick but “Dopey” from Snow White comes to mind.

    Sorry bout’ that Bo.

On a good note I’d have possibly looked as bad/worse given the same circumstances. :)

    Happy New Year all.

  8. You just won the national championship with LSU, why would you go out to the bars wearing Cleveland Indian gear?

  9. Well I’m guessing its pretty safe to assume that Bo Pelini isn’t the first coach to go drinking with his players after they’ve won the big game. If he was supposed to be meeting with the Ambassador of Dubai the following morning, then I might take issue with it.

But if its just a coach out celebrating with his players, players that he’ll never coach again on a team that he’ll never be part of again, after just winning the national championship, then I’m willing to let it slide.

Now if he starts getting bombed with the players after every practice, then I’ll get worried.

  10. My thought is this is Schick trying to get his readers fired up. I guess Bo has done some recruiting, of both coaches and players, but he really hasn’t even started this job yet. Give the man a fighting chance.

The picture is definitely real, and I agree whole-heartedly with everything you said. He is officially under the microscope. It’s a fish bowl in Lincoln… everyone is watching his every move.

    Tim -

I think Bo should live by the motto: WWTD.

    What Would Tom Do?

  12. Come on, Schick, how many times have you pressed pause on the DVR and caught yourself frozen in mid sentence, with your eyes half shut and your mouth at a wierd angle. The posters who say he needs to quit this stuff, what stuff? Staying up late? Enjoying a national championship? Take the picture one millisecond later and he’s probably smiling with bright eyes. Instead you get red eye and a mouth in mid sentence. This is absurd! Just because you’re a head coach doesn’t mean you’re supposed to stay inside unless it’s gameday. Whoever posted this just wanted to make Bo look bad, which apparently he did since it’s on your website and others. Another example of how we in the media try to make something out of nothing on real slow days.

  13. What’s with the Indians gear? He’s the head coach at Nebraska. He should be sporting beige. That picture is just fustrating.

Except for the fact that if I know a camera is pointed at me, I put my teeth together and show my pearly whites.

Take off your Big Red blinders! :-)

  15. I think this is an awesome picture.

Matt-You would only be showing your pearly whites if you knew the camera was aimed at you.

    Anyway-Husker gear, please.
    Husker pj’s.
Husker hat. Husker shirt. Husker everthing.
    Come on, Bo.

    P.S. Go Huskers

  16. What would Tom do??? Geeeesh. Matt, I know teetotaler is the way you roll, but what if Bo is more like a Bob Devaney than a TO? Both won championships, so what if Bo likes to celebrate like the rest of us heathens. More beer to him. I think someone slipped him a roofie like what happened to Frank anyway.

Gimme a call at the station some time… would love to chat. I’d probably recognize your voice.

Teetotaler? Not in the least. You’re missing the point.

He is the head coach at the University of Nebraska. Whether that picture indicates he has been drinking is beside the point. As a head coach at a reputable institution, it is his responsibility to reflect positively on UNL. I would never tell a coach (or anyone for that matter) not to enjoy himself following a monumental victory. But you never want to put yourself in a position where a picture can publicly indict you.

If that were a picture of Bob Stoops, Dan Hawkins or Gary Pinkel, Lord knows you’d be ripping him and assuming the worst. That’s no doubt what others are doing when they look at the picture.

    That’s the point.

  18. Give the guy a break - he and the LSU Tigers had just won the National Championship, it was his last day with the team, and he had worked his tail off for three years to put a top 5 defense on the field each year…Nebraska “fans” are the most are some of the most judgemental fans in country…maybe these judgemental jerks need to look in the mirror…
